“Breathe Deep and Smile”

“Breathe Deep and Smile”

Crisp air descends
as it travels like relatives;
here to stay, grateful,
though for a short while.

Blue-sky expanse
that is larger than anything
clear, free from markings –
we breathe deep and smile.

Darkness comes early,
tired children protest,
adamant, they drift off
and are carried to bed.

Bundled-up grown-ups
all crowd ‘round the fire
that crackles cracked branches
and fends off the cold.

Then all the world sleeps –
the candles are blown out,
the cookies are closed up,
‘til morning’s rays shine.
